The word Bock is short for how the citizens of Munich pronounce the word EinBeck, which is the German city where this style was born. In addition, in German it means male goat and for this reason some breweries put images of this animal in Bock-type beers. In general it is a traditionally reddish beer, which can vary towards a brown color , and sweet in flavor. It has a complex malt flavor due to blends of Vienna and Munich malts, the mouthfeel is smooth, rich and toasty, sometimes with a bit of caramel. The alcohol content is high/high*, ranging from 6% in traditional Bocks, to 10% in Doppelbocks and 14% in Eisbocks, which are all different types of Bock. Another variation of Bock is the Maibock or Helles Bock, a clear bock, with up to 7.4% alcohol. (*high alcohol content: 7.6% to 10%).
