Video games and beers often go hand in hand. Alone or with friends, few things are comparable to the pleasure of a good game while drinking your favorite artisan style.
That is why today, on World Gamer Day, we want to investigate a little more about the "formal" relationship between these two worlds. In other words, we are going to talk about video games in those that appear beers , either as a setting or as a fundamental part of it.
Prepared? Let's start!
The first games and the first beers
Let's go back to eighties and hooligan games like How To Be A Complete Bastard or Andy Capp: The Game , where you could, among other things, have one drink after another until the breathalyzer filled while the balance of our wallet emptied .
In the Tapper arcade, the protagonist was a bartender whose main mechanic was to practice tapping and have customers served and happy.
There were also sagas like Monkey Island where beer was a recurring object for Guybrush Threepwood, where beer served us, among other things, to get rid of the pirate LeChuck (replacing any other drink).
Resident Evil 7 is another mythical title where the "beer" is a key element, since in the minigame of Jack's 55th Birthday the objective is to feed the father of the terrifying family.
Beer as a strategic resource
But beer has not only appeared in video games as a setting, but in many it was a fundamental strategic part. Stronghold is a classic RTS that knew how to introduce the cultivation of hops and breweries in its medieval gameplay. The drink is a currency for other products or a fun factor to keep the feud happy (and that is not far from historical reality!).
A similar use was given to it in the also classic strategy game The Settlers . In his third installment, the beer was essential as it became one of the main resources in late game for the Egyptians. And it is that without beer , there was no way to improve the troops. So there was not only to give the soldiers drink, but also to learn the production process, take care of the crops and ensure a good fermentation that would please the gods.
Beer as a first aid kit
In Duke Nukem Forever finding an unopened can of beer in the hallways was a blessing. It was a medicine cabinet! This item replaced the first aid kit and drinking it reduced Duke's damage in exchange for us seeing a little blurry. Also, in this installment it was impossible to unlock certain achievements without beer involved.
GAT the urban saga with more alcohol
In GTA it is almost logical that there is beer : from cinematics to bars, in their chapters appear birran everywhere... although it does not have positive effects on the lives of its protagonists. And for all this they even invented a bar: Pißwasser
A brand with a lot of humor and lots of references. The first, which sounds very similar to Budweisser, the well-known American brand inspired by traditional recipes from the old continent. But it is also that Pißwasser plays with the word “piss” (does not need translation) and 'wasser' which in German means 'water', which implies that the literal name of the drink is piss water, a badass term for cheap and watery beer .
According to the video game Pißwasser is a poor quality lager that is only good for export.
There are many other works where the ancient liquid is present, either in the dialogues or in a physical form: Fallout, Sherlock Holmes, Mass Effect, Monkey Island, Half-Life, Medal of Honor and The Sims are some names in which you can also find beers .
We are sure that as a good gamer you knew most of these video games, but were you aware that so many beers appeared? Now the next step is to choose the beer that best suits each of these titles... but that will be in the next article (IG post??) . Do not miss it?
